Good marketers start from their own strengths. But honestly: it is still nice to take a look at the competitor to see if they have their affairs in order. And of course to learn from, because the motto ‘better stolen well than badly invented’ is secretly applied quite often. There are various possibilities online to take a look behind the scenes of your competitor. I will take you with me.

The beaten track: website and newsletter
Let’s start with an open door: check out your competitor’s website and sign up for their newsletter. Done ? Then also check if there is a newsletter archive on the website. By law, it is required to show newsletter subscribers a preview of your newsletters before they sign up. In practice, this is not often applied, but who knows, that one competitor may have done it properly according to the rules.

Is your competitor a webshop ? Then check how they present their products: what photos do they use? Maybe a 360-degree photo? What are the product features in it? And if you really want to know how well they have it together, just buy a product and check which emails you get, what the service is like and what goes well (or not well) with the shipping.

Want to look at the technical side a bit more? There are tools and browser plugins that can check scripts in the code of the website. This way you can find out which tools your competitor is using and see if this is something for you too.
